Under the new development trend, TV products need the blessing of new technologies, and Mini LED provides a favorable foundation for the future development of TV.
Today, TV manufacturers have recognized the added value of products brought by Mini LED backlighting and applied the technology to products at various price points.
Jingke Electronics said that mass production models on the market generally create cost-effective products, such as Hisense E7K and Skyworth A7D Pro, through Mini LED backlight partitions of hundreds to thousands of levels. High-end flagship products focus on high-performance display quality, and the number of Mini LED backlight partitions applied is as high as 10,000 or more, such as Hisense ULED X,TCL X11H.
Despite the sluggish demand in the TV market over the past year, Mini LED backlight technology is still accelerating its penetration. Jingke Electronics expects that with the global economic recovery and the blessing of major sports events in 2024, the shipments of displays and televisions are expected to grow, and the penetration and shipments of Mini LED backlight products will also maintain high growth. TrendForce Jibang Consulting expects Mini LED backlight TV shipments to reach 6.21 million units in 2024, up 53.5 percent annually. Shipments are estimated to be 24.4 million units by 2027, accounting for about 12.1 percent of the overall TV market.
Three Factors Drive Mature Application of Mini LED Backlight Technology
Zeng Lighting believes that Mini LED backlight technology can be mature and applied on the ground, thanks to the optimization and improvement of Mini LED technology and cost from three directions in the LED industry.
One is the innovation of Mini LED COB technology. For example, the industry has unified the application of dispensing process technology route in COB products, realized the control of chip luminous angle, reduced the number of Mini LED and obtained the best optical uniform effect, which tends to make Mini LED COB technology mature.
In addition, the precision and repeatability of core key equipment such as solid crystal and adhesive coating have been greatly improved. The design, selection and optimization of process conditions of raw materials; The basic maturity of raw materials such as Mini LED chip, substrate, solder paste, glue and driver IC also drives the progress of COB packaging technology.
Second, the cost of Mini LED COB is rapidly reduced. PCB, chip, IC, silicone and solder paste in COB scheme all have a technical path of cost reduction. Such as PCB technology from FR4 to single-sided, harpoon, light bar; The use of chips has developed from multi-lamp one zone to two lamps or even one lamp one zone. IC reduces costs by increasing channels. The cost of silica gel and solder paste has also been reduced to a certain extent in recent years.
In addition, the improvement of the yield of the production process is also the key to the cost reduction of Mini LED COB. At present, the industry has carried out rich exploration on the key processes, such as printing, chip size, PCB, crystal fixing, repair, etc., and carried out subtle research from various aspects, which finally greatly improved the yield of COB and promoted the cost reduction.
The third is the application of the Mini LED POB extremely low-cost scheme. At present, domestic TV manufacturers mainly apply POB packaging scheme on Mini LED TV, which plays a key role in the rapid application of Mini LED backlight. Jingke Electronics said that POB and COB have similar cost reduction methods, and POB has lower cost in the short term. However, POB's performance is limited by its packaging structure, optical design and angle control. In addition, POB still has the problem of using large power. Therefore, Mini LED backlight still needs to use COB and other better performance packaging technologies in the future.
